When arriving at a website, like a growing majority of Internet users, if the content isn’t visible promptly I’m off somewhere else. I’ve heard all sorts of times quoted as the threshold before people click to the next site, everything from 5 seconds to 30, but there seem to be an increasing number of sites out there who display a full page advert, either instead of content or overlaid over the content for 10-20 seconds when you first arrive at their site. I hate that, but more importantly I’m hating it more and more. I now find that if I visit an site and cannot see the site because of a commercial, if there is no “Skip” button I’m gone. If I don’t see the content I’m not going to bookmark the site, send the link to my friends or vote for it on any social bookmarking systems.

There are lots of methods to monetise your site, to show adverts, promote sponsors etc., but as soon as you start losing a growing number of visitors because of it then you are doing it wrong. Interstitials and overlays are simply irritating, and any business which uses them takes a PR hit every time they annoy some one. They may be good for short term income but in the long run you are killing your site.

Colonel Gaddafi, Lara Croft and Climate Change: All in Today’s News!

Colonal GaddafiToday’s headlines are an excellent mix. We’ve got Colonel Gaddafi (Leader of Libya) calling for a jihad against, of all places, Switzerland. Everyone knows he is completely insane, he even dresses like a loony to prove the point, but now war against Switzerland?

You are probably asking yourself what Switzerland has done to deserve his wrath. Well back in 2008 the Swiss Police arrested one of Gaddafi’s sons for assaulting a servant. The charges for that were later dropped. Then in November last year the Swiss held a referendum which resulted in the banning of minarets in Switzerland because Switzerland is not an Islamic State and they blatantly clash with Swiss architecture.

So they embarrassed one of his sons, but nothing serious came of it, and he disagrees with some of their planning regulations. War seems like a fair way to deal with that…if you are bonkers!

Let’s look closer to home, surely things will be more sensible here. A new road in Derby, UK, is to be named “Lara Croft Way” following a public vote. Now I have nothing against the name, but the local authority allowed anyone in the world to suggest and vote for names, but I suspect the bizarrely high 89% who voted for Lara Croft may have been part of a spoof campaign on the Internet?

Heaviest snows in 18 years!

Scientists are worried that they don’t understand the mechanism of global warming this week in the news. Apparently although the world is “definitely” warming up (try telling that to our local weather – snow, hail, freezing conditions!) the average sea temperature has been falling for the past 5 years and no-one can explain why. Last year the Met Office predicted Britain would have a heatwave summer (didn’t happen!) and a very mild winter (how wrong could they be?!). Judging by the television news, it looks like the US is getting amazing snowfall at the moment.

When are scientists finally going to admit that they don’t actually know what is going on with the climate and they cannot really predict it at all? They predicted a mild winter and we got the heaviest snow in 18 years, and some extremely low temperatures to go with it. I live in a city, by the coast and it hit -10°C here! That’s quite a few degrees below the usual winter low for this area. Anyone else think it odd how “Global Warming” turned into “Climate Change”? Let’s not forget that the climate has never been static and is always changing!
